Asbestos Reference:
This book has one page detailing the use of an asbestos suit and the use of a proximity fire-fighting suit.  About the proximity suit, it says, "This combination glass fiber and asbestos suit - with its aluminized surface - is designed to replace the asbestos suit."  Please see the picture for more information on what the text says.

From our research, the proximity suit was used for a long time period.  Available for sale separately, we have a Bluejackets Manual from 1989 which describes the use of a proximity suit.
