Asbestos Reference:
The section on packing says, "The shaft stuffing boxes of some of the latest types of speed gears are packed with square-braided pure asbestos packing.  .... Older types of speed gears are packed with leather cups of U section filled with asbestos yarn, but very few stuffing boxes of this type are used in modern speed gears."

Approved equipment:
"The parallel piston variable speed gears, manufactured by Waterbury Tool Division of Vickers, Inc., Northern Pump Co., and Vickers, Inc., are approved for driving and controlling auxiliary machinery listed in article 21-1."

The machinery listed in 21-1 include speed gears for driving or controlling steering gears, turret training, windlasses, boat and airplane handling, submarine flood and vent valves, capstans, pusher- and dredger-type ammunition hoists, and for damage control and magazine distant-control flood valves.
