Instructions Relative to Gaskets and Packings (1944).  U.S. Navy Official Table, "Standard Application of Packings and Gaskets" lists 13 kinds of asbestos packings and gaskets, along with Navy Dept specification number. Table lists service & application.
Instructions for the Operation, Care, and Repair of Compressed Air Plants (1944). This World War II era Navy manual says that asbestos gaskets were used on air compressors and air valves.  Almost all U.S. Navy Ships had air systems.
Aeronautical Engineering Catalog (1956). This catalog provides information about Johns-Manville asbestos products used in U.S. Navy jet fighters, USAF aircraft, & US Navy Bureau of Aeronautics airplanes. Also use in the B-29 bomber,  J33 turbojet engine, & Lockheed F-80 jet fighter.

Naval Machinery (1946-1949). 2 Volume Set. Asbestos use on boilers, Naval reciprocating steam engines, asbestos pipe insulation, gaskets, & packing. Also Diatomaceous Earth contained asbestos.
