ASBESTOS REFERENCES:
The chapter on Pneumoconioses has about 2 pages of information on Asbestosis. Most of this is shown in the pictures below. It says that in 1951 it was first reported that fibrosis was due to the mechanical action of the asbestos fiber.
It says that there is conflicting opinions about whether there is a causal relationship between asbestosis and cancer but that there is increasing evidence to suggest that such a relationship exists.
The chapter on "Chemical Hazards" has the following asbestos occupations listed under OTHER hazards (aside from asbestos)....
Under Benzene:
Asbestos product impregnators
Under Cement, Portland:
Asbestos cement pipe makers
Asbestos cement sheet makers
Asbestos cement shingle makers
Under Coal Tar and Fractions:
Asbestos goods workers
--
It could therefore be concluded that the above asbestos workers not only faced the hazard of asbestos but also faced other chemical hazard(s).
Asbestos is mentioned as a filler for plastics and resins.
Additional Information: Benzene is described as a suspected carcinogenic agent and it says that leukemia has been observed in workers with benzene intoxication.
Please ask questions if you are interested in any specific chemical hazards. This book covers detailed information about harmful effects, threshold limit, etc.
